John Brian Langtry

March 22, 1948 - September 3, 2023

Through quiet leadership, faithful administration, mentorship, and years of service to others, Brian strengthened the institutions and friendships entrusted to his care.

John Brian “Brian” Langtry was a dedicated community volunteer, respected Freemason, mentor, administrator, and valued supporter of Winnipeg’s Scottish community.

Known primarily as Brian, he devoted many years to the principles of fellowship, service, integrity, and personal development. His longstanding involvement in Manitoba Freemasonry brought him into leadership roles at the lodge, district, provincial, and Scottish Rite levels.

Brian served as District Deputy Grand Master of Manitoba’s Twelfth Masonic District and later became Grand Treasurer of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba. In these positions, he was entrusted with significant responsibilities and earned the respect of fellow members for his reliability, knowledge, and commitment.

He was also closely associated with the Scottish Rite Valley of Winnipeg, serving as its Executive Secretary. Working from the Masonic Memorial Centre on Corydon Avenue, Brian helped support the organization’s ceremonies, administration, communication, and day-to-day operations.

Brian contributed extensively to the Masonic Memorial Temple itself. As its secretary and treasurer, he represented the organization during important discussions affecting the property and helped safeguard a building that served as a gathering place for generations of Manitoba Freemasons.

One of Brian’s most meaningful areas of service was his work with the Order of DeMolay. As Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Winnipeg Chapter, affectionately known within the organization as “Dad Brian,” he helped mentor young men and encourage the values of leadership, responsibility, friendship, and community service.

His connection to Scottish Rite Freemasonry and Winnipeg’s wider Scottish community also brought him into the fellowship surrounding the Pavilion of Scotland. Through his presence and volunteer service, Brian became part of the network of individuals who helped sustain Scottish culture, friendship, and tradition in Winnipeg.

Brian preferred simplicity and did not seek an elaborate public tribute. Following his passing, his family honoured that wish with an informal gathering where relatives and friends could remember him in their own way.

Brian passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on September 3, 2023, at the age of 75.
