Ian Robert McMahon

December 27, 1952 - December 2, 2020

Through family, workplace advocacy, charitable service, and an irrepressible Scottish spirit, Ian brought laughter, friendship, and heart to every community he joined—always with a hearty “Up yer kilt!”

Ian Robert McMahon was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, health-care worker, community volunteer, and proud Scotsman whose humour and enthusiasm brought warmth wherever he went.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ian immigrated to Canada with his family in 1982. Although Canada became his home, he never lost his Scottish roots, unmistakable sense of humour, or pride in the culture of his birthplace.

Ian shared his life with his wife, Claire, and was a loving father to Ross and Cameron. He took great joy in his grandchildren, Hunter and Duncan, and treasured the time he spent with his family.

For 30 years, Ian worked at St. Boniface Hospital in a career he genuinely enjoyed. He was deeply involved with his union, serving as a representative and helping advocate for his fellow employees. His concern for others also inspired his involvement with charitable initiatives, including efforts supporting food banks and medical research.

Ian played a prominent role within the Pavilion of Scotland community. He served as Pavilion Mayor in both 1996 and 1997, welcoming visitors and proudly representing Scottish culture during Folklorama. His family continued that tradition, with Ross and Cameron later serving as Pavilion youth ambassadors.

Camping was one of Ian’s greatest pleasures. He looked forward to spring throughout the long Manitoba winter, eagerly anticipating the moment when another season at the campground could begin. The outdoors offered him relaxation, friendship, and many cherished family memories.

Ian faced his final illness with the same humour and spirited personality that had defined his life. He passed away on December 2, 2020, at the age of 67.
