Jane Court (nee Clements)

May 11, 1933 - January 16, 2018

Through teaching, faith, volunteerism, creativity, and unwavering devotion to family, Jane showed that love is often expressed most clearly by simply being there.

Jane Court was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, church member, and tireless volunteer whose dependable presence enriched her family and community.

Raised in Rathwell, Manitoba, Jane moved to Winnipeg after high school to attend Normal School and earn her teaching certificate. She began her career in rural Manitoba, teaching for six years before stepping away from the classroom to raise her family.

Jane shared 63 loving years of marriage with her husband, Edward. Together, they raised their children, Jim, Audrey, Alan, and Peter and built a large, closely connected family. She took tremendous pride in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and made every effort to attend their sporting events, concerts, competitions, and other important occasions. Wherever her family was involved, Grandma could be counted on to be there—often with her knitting bag close at hand.

Strong, independent, and endlessly energetic, Jane enjoyed bridge, knitting, sewing, quilting, and live theatre. As a longtime Manitoba Theatre Centre season-ticket holder, she greatly valued the arts and the shared experience of live performance.

Volunteer service was woven throughout Jane’s life. She contributed countless hours to Folklorama, the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Canadian Cancer Society, and numerous charitable campaigns. Through her involvement with the Pavilion of Scotland, Jane and her family became part of a long tradition of cultural celebration and community service.

Jane was also active in the United Church and the United Church Women. Her exceptional contribution to youth ministry was recognized with the Winston Armstrong Memorial Award for outstanding service in young people’s work.

Jane passed away suddenly on January 16, 2018, with her grandson Lucas by her side.
