Janis Elspeth Platts

July 24, 2009

Through friendship, travel, resilience, and the joy of dance, Janis left a legacy that continues each time dancers take the floor in her memory.

Janis Elspeth Platts was a spirited traveller, dedicated professional, and enthusiastic Scottish country dancer who met life’s challenges with optimism and concern for others.

A graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, Janis worked for many years with Manitoba Pool Elevators, later known as Agricore. Her career formed an important part of her life, but she also found tremendous joy in travelling and experiencing new places.

Janis was a devoted member of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and a valued part of Winnipeg’s Scottish cultural community. Through dance, she found friendship, fellowship, and a joyful connection to Scottish tradition.

The affection in which Janis was held by her fellow dancers can be seen in the dances created in her honour. “Prairie Gold” was written for Janis and later dedicated to her memory, while “Janis – The Dancing Damsel” became another lasting tribute to her life and love of Scottish country dancing.

Janis is also remembered among the volunteers of the Pavilion of Scotland, where her enthusiasm and cultural pride became part of the Pavilion’s wider community.

Throughout her life, Janis faced significant challenges with courage, optimism, and a continuing concern for those around her.

She passed away on July 24, 2009, at the age of 59.
