Joan Cameron Muir
April 10, 2006
Through teaching, music, and devoted cultural service, Joan helped ensure that Winnipeg’s Celtic traditions would continue to be heard, understood, and celebrated.

Joan Cameron Muir devoted much of her life to celebrating, teaching, and preserving the Celtic traditions she loved.
Best known for her School of Celtic Studies, Joan helped introduce others to the language, music, history, and cultural heritage of the Celtic nations. Through her teaching and enthusiastic community involvement, she encouraged people of all ages to explore and take pride in their heritage.
Music was also central to Joan’s life. Through her choir, Ceol Mara, she brought people together in song and helped keep the musical traditions of Scotland and the Celtic world alive in Winnipeg.
Joan was an active and valued member of many cultural and community organizations, including the Pavilion of Scotland, the Sons of Scotland, Winnipeg’s Irish community, and the Annie Bond Guild. She was also a proud supporter of the Winnipeg Celtic Pipe Band.
Her involvement across so many organizations reflected her deep belief that heritage was something to be shared, taught, performed, and passed from one generation to the next.
Joan passed away in Winnipeg on April 10, 2006. She is lovingly remembered by her mother, Kate; her brother, Ken, and his wife Margo; her nephew Iain; her niece Carolyn and her family; her special friends; and relatives in Canada, Scotland, and the United States.
