John “Eoin” MacKenzie
December 15, 1935 - March 19, 2020
Through music, friendship, service, and a lifelong love of Scotland, John filled the Pavilion and the lives around him with warmth, laughter, and song.

John “Eoin” MacKenzie was a devoted father, grandfather, social worker, fiddler, and beloved member of Winnipeg’s Celtic music community.
Born in Inverness, Scotland, John began playing music at an early age. His talent eventually led him to perform with the Royal Air Force Band, beginning a lifelong relationship with music that would remain at the centre of his life.
While living in Scotland, John worked at the Tomatin whisky distillery before beginning a career in health care. In 1964, limited employment opportunities prompted John and his wife, May, to immigrate with their family to Selkirk, Manitoba.
John continued working in health care for several years before becoming a social worker with the City of Winnipeg. His career reflected his concern for others and his ability to connect with people from many walks of life. He retired in 1994.
Following retirement, John devoted more time to the two things he treasured most: his family and his music. He was a loving father to John, Vikki, Shona, and Alan, and shared an especially close bond with his granddaughter Lara, who was his cherished pal and musical companion.
A gifted fiddler, John performed with Comhaltas Winnipeg and the Southglen Fiddlers. He was also a familiar and much-loved performer at Folklorama’s Pavilion of Scotland, where he regularly appeared alongside guitarist Ed Goletzki.
Even as his health declined, John continued to play whenever he could. His belief that it was “all about the music” carried him through his final years, and he performed publicly as late as January 31, 2020.
Known affectionately as “The Auld Yin,” John was also remembered for his generous hospitality, quick humour, and appreciation of a properly poured Scotch whisky—preferably without the interference of a measuring glass.
John passed away at Health Sciences Centre on March 19, 2020, at the age of 84.
