Nellie Verna McLeod (nee KOLESAR)
February 21, 1921 - July 16, 2011
Through family, public service, volunteerism, and a lifelong gift for helping things grow, Nellie created a legacy of strength, beauty, and enduring devotion.

Nellie McLeod was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, community leader, gardener, and lifelong volunteer whose determination and generous spirit touched many lives.
Born in her grandparents’ home near Springhill, Manitoba, Nellie grew up on her family’s farm near the original Kolesar homestead. She attended Clarkesville School and dreamed of becoming a teacher, but the hardships of the Depression made further schooling impossible. Determined to continue building a future, she later completed a business course and moved to Winnipeg, where she worked for Snap-On Tools.
In 1943, while travelling by bus from Neepawa to Winnipeg, Nellie met a young soldier named Kenneth McLeod after he offered her his seat. That simple act of kindness marked the beginning of a partnership that lasted more than 65 years.
Nellie and Ken married at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Polonia in 1946 and began their married life in a small home on Pembina Highway. They later lived in Rivers and McCreary, Manitoba, where they raised their children, Barbara, Patricia, and David.
While living in McCreary, Nellie worked part-time with the Turtle River School Division and later for the Village and Rural Municipality of McCreary. She eventually became Secretary-Treasurer of the municipality, a position she held until her retirement in 1985.
Nellie was deeply involved in community life. She was active with the Catholic Women’s League, the Burrows Trail Arts Group, the McCreary Curling Club, and the 4-H movement. Alongside Ken, she was also connected to the Pavilion of Scotland community, sharing in its fellowship and celebration of Scottish culture.
Nellie and Ken travelled extensively throughout their marriage, visiting Hawaii, Australia, Japan, France, continental Europe, Great Britain, and many other destinations. In 1999, they returned to Winnipeg to be closer to their family.
A gifted gardener, Nellie was especially proud of her roses and orchids. Her skill in cultivating orchids earned her several awards through the Manitoba Orchid Society.
Above all, Nellie treasured her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose strength, practicality, and care formed the heart of her family.
Nellie passed away peacefully on October 26, 2011, at the age of 90. Her beloved husband, Ken, followed her less than eight months later.
