Robert “Bob” Criggie
September 22, 1932–May 28, 2019
Robert “Bob” Criggie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, community volunteer, and proud Scotsman whose warmth and cheerful spirit enriched the lives of those around him.
Born in Benholm, Scotland, Bob immigrated to Canada in 1950. He married his beloved wife, Barbara, in April 1954, beginning a partnership that would span 65 years. Together, they raised their children, Bill, Ron, Janet, and Joanne, while living in several communities throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Wherever the family settled, Bob formed friendships that endured for a lifetime.
Bob spent much of his working life in the construction and mining industries. His practical nature, strong work ethic, and genuine interest in people earned him the friendship and respect of his colleagues.
Service to others was an important part of Bob’s life. He was deeply involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, where he volunteered extensively and held executive positions. In recognition of his longstanding commitment, he was honoured with life membership. He was also a life member of the International War Veterans Alliance and devoted time to supporting Deer Lodge Centre.
Bob encouraged and supported all of his children’s interests, from Scouting to Highland dancing. Proud of his Scottish heritage, he also volunteered with Folklorama’s Pavilion of Scotland, helping celebrate the culture and traditions of the homeland he continued to love throughout his life.
He returned to Scotland on several occasions and found great happiness reconnecting with familiar places, family history, and lifelong memories. His love of Scotland was infectious and became an important part of the heritage he passed to his family.
Bob enjoyed flying, fishing, gardening, spending time at the lake, attending Winnipeg Goldeyes games, and cheering for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He had a special affection for animals and could often be heard singing or whistling while working around the house, yard, or cottage.
Above all, Bob treasured time with Barbara and their large family. He was immensely proud of his children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, who lovingly knew him as “Pop.”
Bob passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital on May 28, 2019, at the age of 86, with his family by his side.
