Sheila Boen (nee Hughes)

October 24, 2009

Through leadership, volunteerism, and a lifelong devotion to Scottish culture, Sheila helped strengthen the traditions and organizations that continue to bring Winnipeg’s Scottish community together.

Sheila Boen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and tireless volunteer whose pride in her Scottish heritage enriched Winnipeg’s cultural community for many years.

A longtime resident of Woodhaven, Sheila taught synchronized swimming during her early years. She later built a career with the Great-West Life Assurance Company, taking time away to raise her daughters before returning to work and continuing until her retirement.

Sheila shared her life with her husband, Marlon, and was a loving mother to Shawna and Sandra. She took great joy in her grandchildren, Devyn, Lindsay, and Isabel, and remained closely connected to her extended family and many friends.

Scottish culture held a special place in Sheila’s life. She devoted countless volunteer hours to the Manitoba Highland Dancers Association, the Pavilion of Scotland, United Scottish, the Sons of Scotland, and the Winnipeg Heather-Belle Ladies’ Pipe Band.

Her contribution to Highland dancing was particularly significant. Sheila served as President of the Manitoba Highland Dancers Association from 1983 to 1985, helping guide the organization and support dancers, families, teachers, and competitions throughout the province.

At Folklorama’s Pavilion of Scotland, Sheila was part of the dedicated volunteer family whose behind-the-scenes service helped bring Scottish music, dance, food, and fellowship to thousands of visitors.

Sheila passed away on October 24, 2009, at the age of 74.
